Neutrophils, Lymphocytes
The balance of white cell types.

Typical absolute counts: neutrophils about 1.8–7.7, lymphocytes about 1.0–4.8 ×10⁹/L. As percentages, neutrophils are about 40–70% and lymphocytes 20–40%.
| Situation | Possible meaning |
|---|---|
| High neutrophils | Bacterial infection, stress, corticosteroid-type medicines, smoking |
| Neutrophils <1.5 | Neutropenia: infection risk rises; <0.5 is severe |
| High lymphocytes | Mostly viral infection; a clinician assesses if it persists |
| Lymphocytes <1.0 | Lymphopenia: viral illness, corticosteroids, severe illness |
